Olof Inger

"System breakdown 5" Enamel on steel plates, 560 x 1470 mmonditions", 2009, 200x 174cm.

"System breakdown 4" Enamel on steel plates (three parts), 960 x 960 mm (each).

"Sunset 2" Spray paint on found metal plate, 8 parts, each 500 x 500 mm.

Grounds for the award:
Olof Inger get the Baertling award 2012 for his exploration of the nonfigurative art expression. Inger has a rare ability to transform everyday, often insignificant or discarded materials to very precisely designed artwork. However, the transformation does not contribute to the material intrinsic properties are lost. All parts are equally central to the works of art whether it be the color, the metal that is painted on, or garbage bags which are placed one above the other in a geometric composition.
Olof Inger's art work is therefore based on a balancing act. At the same time that the compositions are easy and finely calibrated, they are also in a brutalist tradition where the material physical and actual qualities are clear. This appeals to the body, as much as to the eye. Even here there is an important connection to Bærtling, whose art always tried to formulate spaces.

"Information paintings" Spray paint on trash bags (ten parts), 1350 x 1700 mm (each).

Dog logic Spray paint on found metal plate, 2 parts, each 380 x 420 mm.
Characterization:
"I see my paintings carrying information, they are representative, in the same way as a cross or an icon. They bring to you what you bring to them.
Why abstract? You can compress so much more information than in a figurative painting. I used to paint figuratively, in a photorealistic style, but I could never escape the motive. In a figurative painting the information is nailed down to a very specific person/place/time and that is not what I want to convey with my paintings. I want to summarize the time in which we exist. Our memory is abstract, our feelings are abstract, our senses are abstract and therefore life is abstract."
